Penny Auction Sites Reviewed

Penny auctions or "penny auction sites" have been popping up online in the recent months. I was very charmed by the penny auction concept and so I set out to give some of them a try and see how they worked.

Since I only have limited time on my hands to test the different penny auctions out, I decided to go with the top 3 major ones.
I tried out Swoopo, Bidray and Bidstick.

Bidray

Of all three penny auction sites that I tried, I actually found Bidray last. After checking through the site for a while and seeing some crazy auctions being sold, I decided to give them a try. I spent a lot of time on the site reading the help section and playing around with my account. While I watched the penny auctions, I saw several users win items, so I decided to purchase some bids for myself and try my luck.
I placed a few bids on some of the penny auctions and ended up winning my first penny auction after only 7 bids! I contacted customer support on the site after the win and got a quick reply within an hour or so. Shipping was also free and I quickly learned that they send the sales price to charity and I got to pick the charity.
What I didn´t like about the site is that they limit the amount of wins a user can get to a maximum of 3/week. This means that you can´t win more than 3 penny auctions per week on the site. They also have a smaller product variety than Swoopo, but I guess that´s because the site is fairly new. I gave customer support a hard time about this, but they came back to me apologizing for this and gave me a fair explanation.

Overall I think this site is probably the best site I´ve seen so far, free shipping, a pretty nice charity program, good support and most of all, it´s actually possible to win something here!!

    Good points:
  • Very Easy to Win on!
  • Good Customer Support
  • Free Shipping
  • Great Charity Program

  • Bad points:

  • Limited Product Variety
  • Wins limited to 3/week for each user

Swoopo

Most of you probably know Swoopo. The site offers a variety of different auctions, but
I decided to play along with the "penny auctions" they offered. At first I was quite
impressed by the large variety of products being auctioned and how there always
seemed to be something on the site that I wanted, be it a laptop or a new TV.
However, I quickly waisted the bids that I had purchased as there is so much
competition with the other users! Swoopo boasts on the site that they have over
1,200,000 users. So you are literally competing against over a million people on the
site! What do you think your chances of winning are?

I contacted Swoopo with a few questions I had and their customer support was
very fast. They came back to me and had all the answers that I needed.
The site doesn´t offer free shipping, and I could not find a charity program either.
So as a person who likes to help others, I was slightly disapointed with this.
Overall I still think Swoopo´s penny auctions are a good site, but if you are looking to really win something, I think you would be better out to try one of the smaller penny auction sites.

    Good points:
  • Huge Product Variation
  • Good Customer Support

  • Bad points:

  • Shipping fees
  • No charity program
  • Very Hard to Win On!

Bidstick

Bidstick penny auctions was the least impressive of the three of them.
They had a very small variety of products at auction and did not have much information about the site and how it operated.

However, considering that the site has a small user base it seamed fairly easy to win on. Even though I did not personally win a penny auction, I did witness a few penny auctions being sold to other happy bidders. Shipping is not free on the site, but they do have a charity program of some sort. I could not find more information about the charity program run on the site, but it´s still better than no charity at all!

    Good points:
  • Small user base, easier to win.
  • Charity program

  • Bad points:

  • Shipping fees ($5 flat)
  • Bad help section
  • Very small product variety
